ABOUT

RealWorldCamping

RealWorldCamping is about the small problems that only become obvious when camping equipment is used in the real world.

On paper, equipment often works perfectly.

At a campsite, things are different. Wind changes direction. Ground conditions vary. Poles flex. Pegs loosen. Canvas moves.

Equipment gets adapted, reinforced, tied down, propped up or used in ways the manufacturer may never have expected.

That is where RealWorldCamping starts.

Observe the workaround

Campers are practical people.When something does not work properly, they usually find a way around it. They add another rope, strengthen a pole, change the angle of a peg, wedge something into position or make a temporary modification.

Those workarounds are worth paying attention to.A workaround often tells us that there is a problem which has not been completely solved.

RealWorldCamping looks at those situations and asks simple questions:

Why is the camper doing this?

What problem are they trying to solve?

Is there a simpler, stronger or more practical way of doing it?

Sometimes the answer is simply useful information.

Sometimes it leads to an experiment, a prototype or a different way of approaching an existing piece of camping equipment.

The process is simple:

Observe. Understand. Test. Improve.

Built around real camping

RealWorldCamping was started by Nico, a South African camper who spent three years travelling and camping long-term.

When camping becomes part of everyday life rather than an occasional weekend away, small equipment problems become much easier to notice.

You see what repeatedly fails, what becomes inconvenient, what campers modify themselves and which supposedly minor problems become frustrating after weeks or months of use.

That experience shaped the thinking behind RealWorldCamping.

The aim is not to create more camping equipment simply for the sake of having more equipment.

The aim is to identify practical problems and look for practical answers.

What we explore

RealWorldCamping focuses on the everyday realities of camping, including:

– tent and awning equipment;

– wind and weather-related problems;

– poles, pegs, ropes and supporting structures;

– campsite setup and equipment use;

– common weaknesses in existing equipment;

– camper-made modifications and workarounds;

– ideas that may make camping simpler, safer or more practical.

Some ideas will remain observations. Some will be tested and discarded. Others may develop into useful solutions. That is part of the process.

Camping as it actually happens.

RealWorldCamping is not based on the idea that there is one perfect way to camp.

Different campers use different equipment, travel to different places and face different conditions.

The useful question is often not:“How is this supposed to work?”

It is:“What actually happens when people use it?”

That is the question behind RealWorldCamping.
